The Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) has commenced the offtake of 10 megawatts (MW) of solar power from the Haske Solar Plant, located in the Challawa Industrial Cluster of Kano State. The initiative stems from a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) between KEDCO and Haske Solar Company Ltd., a project spearheaded by the Federal Government through the Nigerian Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA) and managed by the Ministry of Finance Incorporated (MOFI).

Commissioned in January 2023, the Haske Solar Plant holds the distinction of being Nigeriaโ€™s largest grid-connected solar facility. The agreement was formally signed in Abuja by KEDCOโ€™s Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Abubakar Shuaibu Jimeta, and NSIAโ€™s Executive Director of Portfolio Management, Mr. Tajudeen Datti Ahmed, with Future Energies Africa (FEA) Managing Director, Yusuf Yahaya, present at the signing.

Dr. Jimeta described the development as a significant milestone in KEDCOโ€™s mission to deliver reliable and sustainable electricity across Kano, Katsina, and Jigawa states. โ€œBy integrating solar power into our supply mix, we are enhancing network efficiency while contributing to Nigeriaโ€™s energy transition goals,โ€ he noted.

Under the arrangement, solar energy from the Haske Plant is transmitted through KEDCOโ€™s Abattoir Injection Substation and supplied to industrial customers in the Challawa cluster via the NBC 11kV and Ceramic 11kV feeders.

This agreement underscores Nigeriaโ€™s ongoing efforts to strengthen renewable energy adoption and support the countryโ€™s broader energy transition agenda.
