The Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN) has begun work on a 7-megawatt solar power project at Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH), aimed at ensuring uninterrupted electricity supply for one of the country’s leading healthcare institutions.
The initiative follows an energy audit conducted by the Commission, which highlighted the rising costs of diesel and the risks posed by the hospital’s heavy reliance on the national grid. The project is being implemented in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Innovation, Science, and Technology under the leadership of Chief Uche Nnaji.
The development comes days after prolonged power outages at AKTH reportedly resulted in the loss of lives in the Intensive Care Unit, underscoring the urgency of a sustainable power solution.
ECN Director-General Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi described the project as a critical step in safeguarding healthcare services. “This is not just about powering institutions; it is about saving lives, restoring confidence, and securing a brighter future for Nigerians,” he said.
Officials noted that the project also reflects the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, advancing Nigeria’s people-centered energy transition through reliable and clean power for essential institutions such as hospitals and schools.
