Sonnedix, a global renewable energy company with more than 4 GW of operating capacity, has further strengthened its presence in Italy with the acquisition of five new solar projects located in Sicily and Lazio, adding a combined capacity of 226 MW to its portfolio. This expansion represents a significant milestone for Sonnedix in Italy, where the companyโ€™s total operational capacity now exceeds 800 MW. With approximately 500 MW of projects currently under construction, Sonnedix is on track to reach 1 GW of operational capacity in the country by the end of 2025.

Looking ahead, its development pipeline of around 1.1 GW is expected to double Italyโ€™s total capacity to 2 GW within the next three years, demonstrating the companyโ€™s strong growth strategy in the Italian renewable energy market. While Sonnedix has traditionally focused on solar energy, the company is now diversifying its portfolio to include advanced energy storage solutions. Construction has begun on its first Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Italy, an 18 MW / 4H facility in Sicily.

Axel Thiemann, CEO of Sonnedix, stated,โ€œIt’s remarkable to see the growth we’ve achieved since entering the Italian market in 2010, when we operationalised Sonnedixโ€™s very first solar plant โ€“ and these latest acquisitions are a testament to our long-term commitment to delivering clean, affordable, and reliable energy to customers. Looking ahead, our focus is on continuing to convert our pipeline, particularly exploring opportunities in battery storage and hybridisation. With our extensive knowledge of the Italian energy landscape, and long-term footprint in the market, we are well positioned for continued sustainable growth.โ€

Mario Volpe, Sonnedixโ€™s Head of Growth for Southern Europe and Representative Director for Italy, said in a statement, โ€œThese acquisitions mark a major milestone in our continued growth in Italy, and with a strong pipeline of projects currently under construction, we are accelerating towards our target of 2GW operational capacity by the end of 2028. As we grow, we continue focusing on developing battery energy storage solutions, and delivering a long-term, reliable, and 100% renewable, supply of energy to our customers.โ€
