Masdar, in partnership with the Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC), is developing the world’s first gigascale 24/7 solar and battery storage project in Abu Dhabi, delivering up to 1 gigawatt (GW) of renewable baseload power daily.

The project, announced as part of Masdar’s ongoing clean energy initiatives, addresses the growing global demand for stable, round-the-clock clean energy. Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi, CEO of Masdar, highlighted the project’s significance in the latest episode of the company’s documentary series, Power to Change.

“Clean power isn’t just available when it’s generated, but exactly when it’s needed,” Al Ramahi said. “Our goal is to replicate and expand similar projects globally, sharing this model with the world.”

Once completed, the project will span an area comparable to Manhattan and is expected to avoid 5.7 million tons of carbon emissions annually, meeting roughly one-third of the UAE’s 2030 renewable energy targets.

The US$6 billion initiative combines 5.2 GW of solar photovoltaic (PV) capacity with a 19 gigawatt-hour (GWh) battery energy storage system (BESS), establishing a new global benchmark for clean energy innovation at scale.

Al Ramahi emphasized the broader vision:

“The future of energy is clean, the future of energy is constant, and most importantly the future of energy is affordable.”

The project is set to position Abu Dhabi as a global leader in sustainable energy while providing a model for reliable, large-scale renewable power generation worldwide.
