Georgia Power Begins Construction of 200 MW Battery Energy Storage System in Twiggs County

Georgia Power has begun construction on a 200-megawatt battery energy storage system (BESS) in Twiggs County, southeast of Macon, Georgia. The project, located next to the existing Twiggs County Solar facility, was approved by the Georgia Public Service Commission on September 4, 2025, following its selection through competitive processes outlined in the company’s 2023 Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) Update.

The Twiggs BESS will be capable of delivering stored energy over a four-hour period, supporting grid reliability, flexibility, and the efficient use of renewable energy. By storing excess solar power generated during low-demand periods and releasing it during peak times, such as early mornings or evenings, the system will help balance electricity supply and demand. “At Georgia Power, our collaboration with the Georgia PSC and other stakeholders is key to making necessary investments for a reliable and resilient power grid,” said Rick Anderson, senior vice president and senior production officer for Georgia Power. “With the construction of the 200 MW BESS in Twiggs County, we will be able to better serve our existing customers and support Georgia’s growth. As we expand our energy mix to include more renewable sources, these batteries will play an invaluable role in helping to ensure reliability and flexibility, particularly when renewable sources are not available.”

Constructed by Crowder Industrial Construction, LLC, the Twiggs BESS is expected to be completed in 2027. It joins a broader effort by Georgia Power to expand energy storage across the state, with four additional BESS projects—totaling 765 MW—currently under construction in Bibb, Cherokee, Floyd, and Lowndes counties, all scheduled for completion in 2026.
