In a major step toward energy security and renewable transition, PT PLN (Persero), Indonesiaโs state-owned electricity company, signed a memorandum of understanding with Brazilian investment firm J&F SA to advance the development of hydroelectric power plants (PLTA) with a total capacity of 11.7 gigawatts (GW). The agreement aligns with the national Electricity Supply Business Plan (RUPTL) for 2025โ2034.
The signing ceremony took place in Jakarta on Thursday (23/10), witnessed by Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto and Brazilian President Luiz Inรกcio Lula da Silva. The collaboration aims to accelerate Indonesiaโs clean energy agenda by expanding hydropower infrastructure and leveraging Brazilโs expertise in large-scale renewable development.
President Prabowo emphasized the significance of the partnership, stating that Indonesia and Brazil are emerging economic powers in the global south with shared ambitions in sustainable development. He also noted that the cooperation would extend beyond energy into sectors such as trade, defense, agriculture, and technology.
โWe are two powers in the global south. Therefore, cooperation between Indonesia and Brazil is strategically important, and we both view this relationship as very important,โ President Prabowo said.
Echoing this sentiment, President Lula da Silva highlighted the importance of deepening bilateral relations, particularly in renewable energy, innovation, and economic resilience. He stated that the collaboration represents a new chapter in strategic partnership focused on sustainable growth and technological advancement.
PLN President Director Darmawan Prasodjo welcomed the governmentโs support in enhancing international cooperation to advance clean energy. He affirmed that the agreement will play a pivotal role in harnessing Indonesiaโs vast hydropower potential, helping the country meet its renewable energy targets.
โWe are optimistic that this collaboration will be an enabler for accelerating hydropower development in Indonesia. It reinforces our commitment to delivering greener, fairer, and more sustainable energy for future generations,โ Darmawan said.
Under the RUPTL 2025โ2034, Indonesia targets an addition of 11.7 GW of hydropower capacity to support national energy transition goals and reduce dependence on fossil fuels.
The strategic partnership marks a major milestone in Indonesiaโs journey toward becoming a global leader in renewable energy while strengthening ties with Brazil as a key partner in the clean energy transition.
