SM Offices, the commercial property arm of SM Prime Holdings, Inc., announced that it now sources more than half of its operational electricity from certified renewable energy, reinforcing sustainability as a core element of its business strategy and tenant value proposition.
As of mid-2025, the company has installed solar photovoltaic (PV) systems with a total capacity of 73 megawatts peak (MWp) across 48 malls and office developments nationwide. SM Offices said the shift to clean energy has helped reduce carbon emissions while providing more stable energy costs for tenants and building operations.
Vice President and Head of SM Offices, Alexis L. Ortiga, stated that the companyโs initiatives โnot only support but also go beyond the Philippine governmentโs target of generating 50 percent of the countryโs power from renewable sources by 2040.โ This aligns with the Department of Energyโs National Renewable Energy Program (NREP) 2020โ2040, which aims to increase the share of renewables in the energy mix to 35 percent by 2030 and 50 percent by 2040.
In addition to solar installations, SM Offices is integrating broader sustainability features across its portfolio, including sensor-enabled fixtures, high-efficiency cooling systems, and green building standards. Several developmentsโsuch as ThreeE-Com and FourE-Com Centers in the Mall of Asia Complex, Aura Tower in Bonifacio Global City, Mega Tower in Ortigas, and North Towers in Quezon Cityโhave received LEED Gold certification. Other properties, including One E-Com, Two E-Com, and Five E-Com, are in the process of securing LEED O+M certification for sustainable operations and maintenance.
Ortiga added that SM Offices remains committed to resilience and low-carbon growth by embedding sustainability into its core strategies. He noted that the proximity of its properties to residential areas helps minimize travel time and emissions, supporting a more sustainable urban lifestyle.
