Vedanta Limited’s thermal power units — Meenakshi Energy Limited (MEL) and Vedanta Limited Chhattisgarh Thermal Power Plant (VLCTPP) — have secured a 500 MW Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) from Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation Limited (TNPDCL). This win strengthens Vedanta’s presence in the Independent Power Producer (IPP) segment and reinforces its role in India’s energy security.
According to the Letters of Award, MEL will supply 300 MW and VLCTPP will supply 200 MW of power to TNPDCL at a tariff of approximately ₹5.38/kWh. The five-year PPA will be effective from February 1, 2026, to January 31, 2031.
Vedanta’s allocation represents the highest share from TNPDCL’s 1,580 MW tender, reflecting the company’s operational efficiency and competitive edge. Both power plants were recently acquired and brought to operational status in record time by Vedanta.
Rajinder Singh Ahuja, CEO – Power, Vedanta Limited, stated that the agreement highlights the importance of reliable baseload power for national energy security and showcases Vedanta’s successful turnaround of complex assets such as Meenakshi Energy and VLCTPP.
Vedanta acquired the 1,000 MW Meenakshi Energy plant in Andhra Pradesh in 2023 and revived it to full capacity within two years. The 1,200 MW VLCTPP in Chhattisgarh, acquired in 2022, achieved commissioning of its first 600 MW unit in August 2025.
Across its portfolio, Vedanta operates nearly 12 GW of thermal power capacity, including about 5 GW of merchant (IPP) power across Punjab, Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Odisha. These assets fall under the Vedanta Power business, supporting India’s energy security and economic growth.
