Atlas Renewable Energy, a leading international provider of renewable energy solutions, has officially inaugurated its first solar project in Colombia, the Shangri-La Solar Plant, located in Ibagué, Tolima. With an installed capacity of 201 MWp, the project marks a significant milestone in the expansion of large-scale solar energy in the country and supports the development of a more sustainable and resilient energy system. The Shangri-La project is expected to generate approximately 403.7 GWh of energy annually, sufficient to meet the electricity needs of over 214,000 Colombian households. In addition, it will help avoid nearly 161,000 tons of CO₂ emissions each year, equivalent to removing around 34,000 vehicles from the roads.
This contribution directly supports Colombia’s decarbonization goals and strengthens the nation’s energy transition. Rubén Borja, Country Manager of Atlas Renewable Energy in Colombia, highlighted the broader impact of the project, stating that Shangri-La not only delivers clean and reliable energy to the national grid but has also created employment opportunities, training, and development for the local communities in Tolima. During construction, over 65% of jobs were filled by local labor, and women accounted for 22% of the workforce, exceeding the project’s initial targets and promoting gender inclusion in technical and operational roles.
As part of its sustainability strategy, Atlas Renewable Energy implemented its flagship program, “We are part of the same energy,” which focuses on gender inclusion and technical skill development within local communities. The company also invested in strengthening social infrastructure in the surrounding areas, creating spaces for education, social interaction, and community engagement.
Each Atlas project aims to leave a lasting legacy, generating opportunities and improving well-being for people and their environment. The Shangri-La Solar Plant is developed in partnership with ISAGEN, as part of a larger initiative to develop, build, and operate 1,000 MW of solar projects in Colombia in the coming years, further advancing the country’s energy transition and decarbonization efforts.
Colombia’s Minister of Mines and Energy, Edwin Palma, expressed his appreciation during the project inauguration, recognizing the contributions of the management and operational teams, financiers, banks, and local authorities in making the project a reality. The successful launch of the Shangri-La Solar Plant reinforces Atlas Renewable Energy’s commitment to providing clean energy, supporting local communities, and contributing to Colombia’s sustainable growth and energy security.
