The government of Chad has taken a major step toward expanding its clean energy capacity by signing a memorandum of understanding with Axian Energy, a pan-African investment group. Under this agreement, a 100 MW solar power plant will be developed in NโDjamena, the countryโs capital. The move reflects Chadโs growing focus on renewable energy to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and improve access to electricity.
The project will include a 50 MWh battery storage system, which will store excess solar power and release it when demand increases or sunlight is insufficient. This combination of solar power and battery storage is expected to strengthen the countryโs energy stability. It will also help ensure that households and businesses receive a more reliable supply of electricity, especially during peak consumption hours or cloudy weather.
Axian Energy has stated that the solar plant is expected to generate around 180 GWh of electricity every year once it becomes operational. This level of output could supply power to over 150,000 households, making it a significant contribution to the countryโs energy needs. Besides improving electricity access, the project will help Chad reduce its carbon emissions. Estimates indicate that the solar-plus-storage facility could cut nearly 120,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide annually, supporting the countryโs climate commitments.
The development is being undertaken by Axian Energy in partnership with Green Energy Solutions. Both companies see the project as an important milestone in Chadโs renewable energy journey. Axian Energy emphasized that this initiative fits within the broader goal of supporting Africaโs transition to clean, sustainable power. The company highlighted that expanding renewable energy infrastructure is essential for improving energy access across the continent.
For Chad, the project is expected to bring long-term benefits beyond electricity generation. It will help build a more resilient energy system, attract new investment, and create job opportunities during construction and operation.
