Germany’s SIGNAL IDUNA PARK, home of Borussia Dortmund (BVB), now holds the world record for the most powerful photovoltaic (PV) system on a stadium roof, following the completion of a 5-megawatt solar installation developed in collaboration with energy company RWE AG.

The project features 11,132 solar modules capable of generating over 5 MWp, allowing BVB to cover up to half of the stadium’s electricity needs with renewable energy. The record was officially confirmed by the German Record Institute. The new system is projected to reduce CO₂ emissions by approximately 1,700 tonnes annually.

Battery Storage to Enhance Renewable Use

By early 2026, a 3.7 MWh battery storage facility will be operational, enabling the stadium to utilize solar energy even when sunlight is unavailable. This facility complements earlier renewable initiatives, including a 200-module PV system installed at the BVB Fan World building in April 2024.

The solar installation is part of a six-year sustainability partnership between RWE and BVB, under which RWE serves as a premium and sustainability partner, supporting the club’s ambitious decarbonization strategy.

Statements from Leadership

Markus Krebber, CEO of RWE AG, said: “We are proud to have set a new record with BVB. Together, we have installed the world’s most powerful solar system on the roof of Germany’s largest stadium—a powerful statement in favour of efficient climate protection.”

Hans-Joachim Watzke, Chairman of the Management Board, BVB, added: “SIGNAL IDUNA PARK symbolizes our integrated efforts to ensure Borussia Dortmund’s future viability. We are delighted that our iconic home can now be associated with a record-breaking project for climate protection.”

Carsten Cramer, Managing Director, BVB, noted: “Together with RWE, we have achieved a real milestone in our sustainability partnership. This project is a key component of our decarbonization strategy and demonstrates our commitment to continuous improvement and responsibility.”

The record-breaking PV system at SIGNAL IDUNA PARK underscores the potential for large-scale renewable energy integration in sports infrastructure, combining regional impact with global visibility in climate action.
