HH Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman of the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy (DSCE), chaired the councilโs 91st meeting, held virtually, to assess Dubaiโs progress on major clean energy and sustainability initiatives aligned with the emirateโs long-term climate goals.
The meeting was attended by HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Vice Chairman of the Council; HE Ahmed Buti Al Muhairbi, Secretary General; and senior board members including HE Marwan bin Ghalita (Dubai Municipality), HE Abdulla bin Kalban (Emirates Global Aluminium), HE Hussain Sultan Lootah (ENOC), Juan-Pablo Freile (Dubai Petroleum and DUSUP), and Muna Alosaimi (RTA).
Key Sustainability Programmes Under Review
The council reviewed Dubaiโs strategic sustainability objectives and examined key programmes that support the emirateโs commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. Discussions focused on two major initiatives:
- Dubai Municipalityโs Circle Dubai initiative, aimed at strengthening waste-reduction practices and advancing circular economy models.
- The RTAโs โZero-Emissions Public Transportation in Dubai 2050โ strategy, which outlines plans to transform Dubaiโs mass transit fleet through electrification, hydrogen mobility, and expanded clean transport infrastructure.
Commitment to Clean Energy and Circular Economy
HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer highlighted how current initiatives align with the vision of HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum and support both the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050 and the Dubai Net Zero Carbon Emissions Strategy 2050, which target providing 100% clean energy by mid-century.
Al Tayer noted that the Circle Dubai initiative represents a major step in modernising waste management through advanced technologies for collection, sorting, and recycling. He added that progress on the RTAโs zero-emissions strategy reflects Dubaiโs commitment to reducing transport-related emissions by scaling up electric and hydrogen-powered mobility.
Performance Monitoring and Future Priorities
HE Ahmed Buti Al Muhairbi emphasised the councilโs continued focus on evaluating and monitoring the implementation of approved strategies to ensure sustained results in the emirateโs clean energy and sustainability agenda.
The council reiterated that waste reduction, increased recycling rates, and lowering carbon emissions from land transport will remain priority areas for follow-up and future policy development.
