The Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) has announced the successful installation of 45,911 off-grid solar agricultural pumps within 30 days, marking one of the fastest deployments of such systems globally. The feat has been formally submitted to the Guinness World Records (GWR) for recognition.

With this milestone, Maharashtra now ranks as Indiaโ€™s fastest solar pump deployment state, and second only to China worldwide in scale and execution speed by a single administrative region.

The initiative forms part of the Government of Indiaโ€™s ongoing push toward agricultural decarbonisation and falls under the PM-KUSUM (Component B) and Magel Tyala Saur Krushi Pump Yojana (MTSKPY) schemes, aimed at expanding clean, reliable irrigation and reducing dependency on conventional energy.

Operational Blueprint Behind the Record Deployment

MSEDCL attributes the accelerated rollout to a combination of system-level planning and farmer-led implementation strategies. Key operational elements included:

  • Targeted Execution: Priority was given to drought-affected regions to maximise agricultural benefit.
  • Vendor Governance: Empanelled vendors operated under strict service-level agreements ensuring complaint resolution within three days, supported by automated escalation systems.
  • Parallel Deployment Teams: Multiple installation units worked simultaneously across districts with real-time progress monitoring.
  • Farmer Support Framework: Solar pump capacity was allocated based on landholding size, coupled with field-level assistance and operational training.
  • Policy Alignment: Future agricultural electricity supply is being linked to off-grid solar connections to ensure uninterrupted daytime power.

According to MSEDCL, the model represents a scalable framework that could be adopted statewide and by other countries pursuing climate-resilient agriculture.

Leadership Reaction

Commenting on the milestone, Maharashtra Chief Minister Shri Devendra Fadnavis said the achievement marks a major step in advancing farmer-focused renewable energy.

โ€œIn just one month, Maharashtra has installed more than 45,911 solar pumps, making the state the number one in India for solar agriculture,โ€ he said. โ€œThis initiative strengthens irrigation security, boosts productivity, and enhances farmer incomes while accelerating the shift away from conventional energy sources.โ€

MSEDCL Chairman and Managing Director Shri Lokesh Chandra, IAS, highlighted policy enforcement and transparent vendor engagement as core success drivers.

โ€œWe have ensured strict compliance mechanisms and grievance timelines to protect farmer interests,โ€ he said. โ€œThe state has also transitioned to providing new agricultural connections exclusively through off-grid solar pumps.โ€

Scaling Toward a National Clean Energy Milestone

Maharashtra has already deployed over 7.47 lakh solar pumps, with a target of 10.45 lakh installations. The programme now stands among the worldโ€™s largest agricultural solarisation efforts.

Officials noted that the modelโ€”built on digital tracking, ecosystem accountability, and farmer-first planningโ€”offers a blueprint for other Indian states and Global South economies seeking to scale renewable irrigation.

MSEDCL confirmed its continued commitment to expanding solar farming infrastructure, reducing grid burdens, and supporting Indiaโ€™s long-term climate and energy security goals.
