As the rainy season begins in Zambia, the country’s ambitious energy diversification agenda is reaching a pivotal stage, with solar power emerging as a key focus. Over the past five days, Southern Province—home to Zambia’s largest hydroelectric power stations—has become the centre of the government’s efforts to build a climate-resilient energy system. Last Thursday, the Kafue Gorge Lower 100MW solar project was officially launched in Chirundu district, marking a significant step toward enhancing the region’s energy security. The following day, ZESCO Limited inaugurated two additional major initiatives: the Choma 35MW Solar Project and the Kafue West-Muzuma 330kV Transmission Line.
The Choma 35MW Solar Project is designed to address the country’s existing energy gap, strengthen energy security, and advance President Hakainde Hichilema’s commitment to achieving 1,000MW of solar electricity. The project, located in the villages of Munapuutu and Siamalambo within Chief Cooma’s chiefdom, is expected to deliver clean, reliable electricity within eight months. Developed by the China Energy Engineering Group-Hunan Electric Power Design Institute, the project is projected to generate 300 jobs and create commercial opportunities for the local community.
The Kafue West-Muzuma 330kV Transmission Line is a critical infrastructure addition that will enable the evacuation of electricity from new generation projects, including the upcoming 600MW coal plant in Sinazongwe and the 300MW Mamba expansion project, to the national grid and onward to consumption centres. Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony in Muzuma, Choma district, Eng. Justin Loongo, Managing Director of ZESCO, highlighted the significance of these projects. He noted that the transmission line enhances the interconnectedness of the Southern African Power Pool, while the Choma solar plant provides clean, reliable energy for local communities. He emphasized that accelerated development is essential to meet the needs of both the population and the economy.
Choma Mayor Javan Simoloka welcomed the developments, noting that they signal not only progress but also an open environment for investment in the district. Speaking on behalf of Energy Minister Makozo Chikote, ZESCO Board Chairperson Vickson Ncube highlighted that the launch of the solar plant and transmission line demonstrates responsive leadership and the importance of strategic partnerships.
He added that a stable and enabling regulatory environment under the New Dawn government has allowed ZESCO to accelerate projects and attract credible investors, contributing to Zambia’s energy security and economic growth. Together, these initiatives reflect Zambia’s commitment to diversifying its energy mix, enhancing grid stability, and fostering sustainable development while creating jobs and opportunities for local communities.
