Colombia has officially inaugurated Pétalo del Norte I, the country’s first solar power plant developed under international standards, marking a significant stride in its national energy transition efforts.
The 19.9 MW project, equipped with LONGi’s Hi-MO 7 photovoltaic modules, is positioned as a landmark in the adoption of advanced solar technologies for cleaner and more efficient power generation. Located in La Esperanza, Norte de Santander, the plant is expected to produce more than 43 GWh of renewable energy annually—enough to supply over 32,000 residents while preventing nearly 13,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions each year.
During construction, the project generated 270 direct jobs, with local workers accounting for 64% of the workforce and women representing 30%—a notable benchmark for social inclusion and gender representation within the sector.
Pétalo del Norte I is also the first solar project in Latin America to achieve commercial operation under the principal investment and backing of Climate Fund Managers (CFM), with additional support from the European Union. The project was developed and executed by Erco Energía as the local partner and contractor, while Andina Solar managed project oversight and administration. The plant will operate under a 15-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with an independent trader, ensuring long-term operational certainty.
Officials noted that the inauguration of Pétalo del Norte I stands as a major boost for Colombia’s solar expansion plans and highlights the role of international cooperation in advancing decarbonization initiatives. LONGi reaffirmed its ongoing commitment to supporting high-impact renewable energy developments across the region.
