Rajasthan has witnessed a sharp rise in its power generation capacity over the past five years, reflecting the state’s rapid progress toward becoming one of India’s leading renewable energy hubs. As of October 31, 2025, the total installed power generation capacity in the state stood at 54.77 GW. This represents a substantial addition of 32.75 GW compared to March 31, 2020, when Rajasthan’s installed capacity was 22.02 GW.
The growth in installed capacity has been steady and consistent year after year. From 22.02 GW in March 2020, capacity increased marginally to 22.64 GW by March 2021. A sharper jump was recorded in March 2022, when installed capacity reached 30.13 GW. The upward trend continued with 35.74 GW in March 2023, followed by 40.09 GW in March 2024. By the end of March 2025, Rajasthan’s installed capacity had grown to 47.12 GW, before reaching 54.77 GW by the end of October 2025. This sustained expansion highlights the state’s growing focus on renewable energy, particularly solar power.
To support the evacuation and integration of large-scale solar and renewable energy projects, Rajasthan has been strengthening its transmission infrastructure under the Intra-State Green Energy Corridor (GEC) scheme implemented by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy. Under GEC Phase-I, a total of 1,054 circuit kilometers of transmission lines and substations with a capacity of 1,915 MVA have been commissioned. These assets are designed to evacuate around 2,400 MW of renewable energy. Key projects under this phase include the 400 kV Grid Sub Station (GSS) at Jaisalmer-2 with associated transmission lines, the 220 kV GSS at Chhatargarh, the 220 kV double-circuit Akal–Jaisalmer-2 line, and the line-in-line-out arrangement of one circuit of the 400 kV Akal–Jodhpur line at the Jaisalmer-2 GSS.
Work is also progressing under GEC Phase-II, which aims to further strengthen the grid. This phase involves the implementation of 659 circuit kilometers of transmission lines and substations with a total capacity of 2,191 MVA to evacuate about 2,478 MW of renewable energy. Major projects under Phase-II include the construction of 400 kV GSS at Udaipur and Hanumangarh, and a 220 kV GSS at Dungarpur, along with their associated transmission lines.
In key solar-rich regions such as Bikaner, Jaisalmer, Churu, and Phalodi, grid connectivity is being reinforced through 33 Inter-State Transmission System (ISTS) projects currently under construction. The Central Transmission Utility of India Limited has received connectivity applications totaling about 133 GW for various renewable energy complexes in Rajasthan. Transmission systems for approximately 73 GW have already been planned and are at different stages of implementation, while systems for the remaining 60 GW are yet to be finalized. At the state level, Rajasthan Rajya Vidyut Prasaran Nigam Limited has been granting intra-state connectivity based on applications received from developers.
To ensure grid stability and manage the variability associated with renewable energy, energy storage is emerging as a key focus area. At the national level, the estimated requirement for energy storage by 2031–32 is 73.93 GW or 411.40 GWh, including both battery energy storage systems and pumped storage projects. In Rajasthan, a 1,000 MW or 2,000 MWh battery energy storage project is being set up, with half of the capacity awarded under the state component and the remaining half awarded by NVVN under the central component. Additionally, 4,000 MWh of battery storage capacity has been allocated to the state under the PSDF scheme.
The Rajasthan Integrated Clean Energy Policy, 2024, further strengthens this push by targeting 10 GW of energy storage and hydro capacity by 2030. Under this policy, 2,450 MW of solar capacity at the Pugal Solar Power Park is being implemented along with 2,450 MW or 5,000 MWh of energy storage capacity. Alongside this, investment-focused reforms such as the Rajasthan Investment Promotion Scheme, 2024, aim to attract large-scale investments and position Rajasthan as a national green energy hub.
