DEWA Highlights Clean Energy Leadership While Hosting Global SDG Delegation

The Sustainability and Innovation Centre of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has welcomed a high-level delegation of 30 leaders from 15 countries, including the UAE, as part of the Global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Leadership Programme.

The programme was launched by the UAE’s National Committee on SDGs and the Government Experience Exchange Program, overseen by the Ministry of Cabinet Affairs, in collaboration with the SDG Academy. The visit aimed to strengthen global leadership capacity and knowledge-sharing in advancing the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

DEWA Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer said the initiative reflects DEWA’s commitment to empowering leaders with the tools and expertise needed to drive sustainable development. He noted that the visit reinforces DEWA’s role as a global hub for knowledge exchange and a key contributor to the achievement of the UN SDGs.

Al Tayer highlighted that, since the announcement of the SDGs in 2015, DEWA has taken proactive steps to align its strategies and operations with the goals, in line with the directives of the UAE’s leadership. As a member of the UN Global Compact, DEWA actively supports several SDGs, including clean water and sanitation, affordable and clean energy, decent work and economic growth, industry, innovation and infrastructure, responsible consumption and production, and climate action. He added that these efforts were recognised when DEWA won the European Foundation for Quality Management (EFQM) UN SDGs Challenge in 2021.

During the visit, the Sustainability and Innovation Centre team showcased DEWA’s key energy transition and carbon reduction initiatives. These included the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, the world’s largest single-site solar park developed under the independent power producer model. The solar park’s capacity is expected to exceed 8,000 MW by 2030, surpassing the original target of 5,000 MW, and is projected to reduce carbon emissions by 8.5 million tonnes annually.

The delegation was also briefed on DEWA’s Green Hydrogen project, the first of its kind in the Middle East and North Africa to produce hydrogen using solar power. The project supports clean energy generation through hydrogen-powered engines and enables applications such as hydrogen mobility, contributing to emissions reduction across multiple sectors.

In addition, the visitors learned about DEWA’s EV Green Charger initiative, which provides smart and resilient electric vehicle charging services through more than 1,500 charging points across Dubai.

Members of the delegation praised the Sustainability and Innovation Centre’s integrated approach, combining interactive exhibitions, immersive learning, professional training and strategic innovation within a single ecosystem. They also commended DEWA’s strong commitment to climate action, its net-zero ambitions and its vision for a more sustainable future.
