Polaris Smart Metering has achieved a significant milestone in India’s smart electricity metering rollout, having deployed one million smart meters across multiple locations. The deployment is live and operates without dedicated gateways, leveraging a dual-communication solution developed in close partnership with Wirepas. The system meets the strict service-level requirements of large-scale utility programs in India.

Polaris’ dual-communication approach allows smart meters to switch seamlessly between available communication paths, either mesh or cellular. This ensures that data is delivered reliably even if one path is congested or temporarily unavailable. The approach reduces missed readings, improves billing accuracy, and helps utilities consistently meet their service-level commitments. As smart metering expands into dense urban areas, remote locations, and regions with mixed infrastructure, this built-in resilience is crucial for maintaining reliable, large-scale operations.

Manish C. Swamie, Senior Vice President of Business Development at Polaris, said that reaching one million deployed smart meters represents a major step forward in India’s energy transformation. He emphasized that the collaboration with Wirepas demonstrates the dual-communication solution’s ability to deliver reliable, large-scale performance, enabling utilities to expand smart metering with confidence while meeting service-level and reliability targets in even the most challenging environments.

The solution utilizes the Wirepas Platform, a mesh networking technology that allows smart meters to support each other in delivering data. This self-managing network reduces dependence on fixed infrastructure, enhances resilience, and enables utilities to maintain consistent performance as networks grow and evolve.

Sebastian Pellorce, Senior Vice President India Business at Wirepas, highlighted that the milestone confirms the dual-communication concept as a game changer for large-scale smart metering deployments in India. He explained that, together with Polaris Smart Metering, the Wirepas Platform enables seamless switching between mesh and cellular communication paths, ensuring reliable data delivery in difficult conditions. This collaboration simplifies smart meter rollouts and allows Polaris’ AMISPs to meet stringent service-level agreements more efficiently.

Looking ahead, Polaris and Wirepas are preparing the next phase of deployment, targeting up to five million additional smart meters on an accelerated timeline. The partnership also supports India’s Make in India initiative by fostering strong technical collaboration and local delivery. This ensures that the smart metering infrastructure is not only reliable and scalable but also sustainable in the long term.
