Tata Power, one of India’s largest vertically integrated power companies, today inaugurated the Energy Insights & Innovation Lab (EIIL) at its Mumbai headquarters. The strategic initiative aims to leverage advanced research, data analytics, and experimentation to support India’s clean energy transition while improving the reliability, affordability, and quality of electricity services across the country.
The EIIL is a collaborative effort with the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) and the International Growth Centre (IGC), a global research centre based at LSE. The Lab will address critical challenges in India’s power sector, including managing peak electricity demand and facilitating deeper integration of renewable energy in line with India’s net-zero targets.
The launch ceremony was attended by Dr Praveer Sinha, CEO & MD, Tata Power; Prof. Robin Burgess, Professor of Economics and Director of IGC, LSE; Dr. Jonathan Leape, Executive Director, IGC; and HM Harjinder Kang, Trade Commissioner for South Asia and British Deputy High Commissioner for Western India. Also present were Dr. Chetan Ghate, Professor at ISI, and IGC ISGH. The event also marked the signing of an MoU between Tata Power, LSE, and IGC to co-develop scalable, evidence-based solutions for the Indian power sector.
The Lab will combine consumer behavioural science, energy systems modelling, and IoT-based analytics to design and test practical solutions for demand-side management and grid resilience. Pilot projects will explore methods to shift or smooth peak electricity demand in urban households while maintaining consumer comfort.
Looking ahead, the partnership intends to expand EIIL into a full-scale innovation hub, enhancing funding, institutional partnerships, and support for tariff design, distributed renewables, consumer flexibility, and energy equity.
With India’s electricity demand rising due to industrial growth, digital infrastructure, electric mobility, and lifestyle requirements, efficiency and system flexibility have become critical. EIIL aims to provide actionable insights and scalable solutions to help utilities and policymakers integrate renewables while optimizing grid operations.
The collaboration reflects a UK–India research model, combining global academic expertise from LSE and IGC with Tata Power’s operational capabilities and commitment to sustainable innovation.
