European Energy has taken the final investment decision for a 225 MW agri-photovoltaic (agri-PV) project near Vizzini in Sicily, marking one of the largest renewable energy developments in Italy. The project follows European Energy’s successful award in the recent FERX Contract for Difference (CfD) auction and represents a major step in advancing the country’s renewable energy capacity. The Vizzini project, authorised in 2023, combines utility-scale solar power with ongoing agricultural activity. It features elevated photovoltaic structures that allow continued farming operations, enabling dual land use while supporting long-term land productivity.

The development aligns with Italy’s long-term energy strategy and the European Union’s broader decarbonisation objectives, demonstrating a model for integrating renewable energy with sustainable agriculture. Once operational, the Vizzini agri-PV installation is expected to become Italy’s largest solar park, surpassing the scale of previous grid-connected installations and making a significant contribution to the country’s renewable energy generation capacity.

Alessandro Migliorini, Director and Country Manager of Italy at European Energy, noted that the project highlights the company’s capacity to develop complex renewable energy projects in Italy’s evolving power market. He emphasized that the integrated design allows agricultural use to continue alongside large-scale solar energy production.

Thorvald Spanggaard, Executive Vice President and Head of Project Development at European Energy, stated that the project reflects the company’s ongoing commitment to the Italian market. He added that European Energy’s development philosophy focuses on combining green energy production with local economic development while maintaining agricultural activity in the region. The long-term revenue stability provided by the FERX auction has enabled the company to move forward with this investment.

European Energy has a strong track record in Italy, including the Troia solar park, which was connected to the grid in 2022 and was at the time the country’s largest solar installation. The Vizzini agri-PV project is scheduled to be fully operational by the end of 2027, further reinforcing Italy’s renewable energy landscape and demonstrating how large-scale solar projects can coexist with agricultural production.
