Plug Power has installed a 5 MW GenEco electrolyzer system for Cleanergy Solutions Namibia at its green hydrogen project in Walvis Bay, marking a major milestone for Africa’s hydrogen sector. The project is being described as Africa’s first fully integrated commercial green hydrogen facility and is expected to play an important role in expanding hydrogen mobility in Namibia and nearby markets.
The plant, which officially opened in September, is located at Cleanergy Solutions Namibia’s Hydrogen Dune site. It combines renewable power generation, hydrogen production, storage, and refueling infrastructure at a single location. The facility operates fully off-grid and is designed to show how green hydrogen can move from pilot concepts to real commercial use.
At the heart of the project is Plug Power’s PEM GenEco electrolyzer, which produces green hydrogen using electricity generated from a dedicated 5 MW solar park. The solar installation covers more than 6.5 hectares and is supported by a 5.9 MWh battery energy storage system. Together, these systems ensure a stable supply of renewable power for hydrogen production without relying on the national grid.
The hydrogen produced at the site will be used to support hydrogen-powered trucks, port and rail equipment, and small vessels operating through the Port of Walvis Bay. In addition, the facility will supply hydrogen for vehicles that are converted on-site to run on a dual-fuel system using both hydrogen and conventional fuels. A public hydrogen refueling station is also part of the integrated setup.
By linking solar power generation directly with hydrogen production and refueling, the project creates a vertically integrated model that connects clean electricity with clean hydrogen. This approach supports decarbonization in transport, maritime operations, and industrial activities, while also strengthening Namibia’s position as a future hydrogen production hub.
Plug Power said the project shows how green hydrogen is becoming a commercial reality, especially in emerging markets with strong renewable energy resources. The company noted that regions such as Africa, the Middle East, and Australia are gaining attention as next-generation hydrogen hubs due to supportive policies and high-quality renewable potential.
The Cleanergy Solutions Namibia project is expected to act as a model for similar developments across Africa. It also highlights Namibia’s growing role in renewable hydrogen production, with potential not only for domestic use but also for future exports.
