Nova Sustainable Fuels has received environmental assessment approval for the first phase of its renewable energy park project in Goldboro, Guysborough County. This project will focus on producing sustainable aviation fuel using waste biomass sourced from Nova Scotiaโs forestry sector and related forest-based industries. The initiative aims to provide a low-emission alternative to conventional petroleum-based aviation fuels, contributing to the reduction of carbon emissions.
The project has been recognized for its potential environmental and economic benefits. Timothy Halman, Minister of Environment and Climate Change, emphasized the importance of such initiatives, stating that projects like this play a critical role in lowering global carbon emissions while generating employment opportunities and boosting the local economy. He further highlighted that supporting projects of this nature helps position Nova Scotia as a leader in climate action, innovation, and the global clean energy transition.
While the first phase has received approval, Nova Sustainable Fuels will need a second environmental assessment for the projectโs proposed second phase. This phase includes the development of a wind and solar farm, along with a transmission line to supply renewable energy for sustainable fuel production. The project is expected to generate significant employment and economic impact. During the construction phase, approximately 1,000 jobs are anticipated, while operations are expected to sustain up to 80 jobs through the projectโs operational life, which is projected to continue until 2081.
In addition, the project is expected to provide direct and indirect economic benefits to local businesses, communities, and residents. To ensure environmental protection and public safety, the project must comply with 34 specific terms and conditions outlined in the environmental assessment approval. These conditions are designed to safeguard both human health and the surrounding environment. Furthermore, the project will require additional approvals, including an industrial permit and a water withdrawal approval, before proceeding.
