Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company PJSC โ€“ Masdar, a global clean energy leader, has signed a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) for the 150-megawatt Quipungo Solar Photovoltaic project in Angola, marking the companyโ€™s first PPA in the country. The project is the first contracted site under Project Royal Sable, a planned 500MW renewable energy programme across three sites designed to strengthen Angolaโ€™s southern power grid and support sustainable development objectives.

The PPA was signed with state-owned offtaker Rede Nacional de Transporte de Electricidade (RNT-EP) during the 16th IRENA General Assembly, held alongside Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week. The agreement was executed on behalf of Masdar by Abdulaziz Alobadli, COO, and on behalf of RNT-EP by Mauro Hernany Ferrerira Martins, Executive Director for Market Operations and Regulatory Affairs, in the presence of senior UAE and Angolan officials, including ministers and diplomats, as well as IRENA Director-General Francesco LaCamera and Masdar CEO Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi.

The Quipungo Solar PV site, located in Huila Province in southern Angola, will serve as the commercial anchor for Project Royal Sable. Once completed, the broader 500MW initiative is expected to create more than 2,000 jobs, supply clean electricity to approximately 300,000 homes, and enhance power generation capacity in southern Angola.

Commenting on the project, IRENA Director-General Francesco LaCamera said the PPA demonstrates UAE and Masdarโ€™s commitment, supported by IRENAโ€™s Energy Transition Accelerator Financing (ETAF) platform, to turn national energy plans into actionable renewable projects, strengthening Angolaโ€™s power system and investor confidence in Africaโ€™s energy transition.

Masdar CEO Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi highlighted the strategic importance of the deal, stating, โ€œAfrica is the worldโ€™s fastest-growing continent, and its development relies on affordable, secure energy. Signing our first PPA in Angola is a key milestone that accelerates utility-scale renewables deployment, supports economic development, and delivers reliable clean power to communities.โ€

Through its joint venture, Infinity Power, Masdar is now the largest operator of renewables in Africa, with 1.3GW of operational solar and wind projects in South Africa, Egypt, and Senegal, and a 13.8GW project pipeline including battery storage and green hydrogen facilities. The addition of Project Royal Sable will contribute to Masdarโ€™s goal of achieving a 100GW renewable energy portfolio by 2030.
