Scatec ASA, a leading renewable energy company, has commenced commercial operation of the second 60 MW phase of the 120 MW Mmadinare Solar Cluster in Botswana. This marks an important milestone for Scatec, as the Mmadinare Solar Cluster represents the company’s first renewable energy project portfolio in the country, with the first phase having been operational since March 2026. The power plant is set to generate stable revenues under a 25-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with the national utility, Botswana Power Corporation. While Scatec owns 100% of the project portfolio, the company plans to reduce its long-term economic stake by inviting additional equity partners in the future.
Scatec’s CEO, Terje Pilskog, said, “We are very proud to achieve commercial operation for the second phase of the solar power plant portfolio within budget and ahead of schedule, reinforcing our commitment to advancing renewable energy in the region. This is an important first step for Botswana, which holds significant potential for the deployment of competitive and reliable renewable energy to support economic development.”
Alberto Gambacorta, Scatec’s EVP and GM for Sub-Saharan Africa, added, “As Botswana accelerates its renewable energy transition, this milestone represents an important moment for the country and the region. Solar power is increasingly central to powering communities and driving sustainable growth. We are honoured to operate the country’s first utility-scale solar PV facility and contribute to Botswana’s long-term energy ambitions.”
Together, the two phases of the Mmadinare Solar Cluster are expected to produce approximately 280 GWh of clean energy annually, helping to avoid an estimated 380,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions each year. Scatec will continue to provide comprehensive Operation & Maintenance as well as Asset Management services to the power plants, ensuring reliable performance and long-term sustainability.
