Uniper Global Commodities SE and AM Green Ammonia India Private Limited (AM Green Ammonia) have signed a long-term binding offtake agreement for renewable ammonia certified as a Renewable Fuel of Non-Biological Origin (RFNBO). The deal, the first of its kind for an Indian company, was formalized in the presence of German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Under the agreement, Uniper will offtake up to 500,000 tons per year from AM Green’s green ammonia projects, with the first shipment expected in 2028 from AM Green’s 1 MTPA plant under construction in Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh. The partnership represents a major step in India’s National Hydrogen Mission, reinforcing the country’s ambition to become a leading exporter of green hydrogen and ammonia.

For Uniper, the renewable ammonia supply will diversify its portfolio of low-carbon molecules for European customers, supporting decarbonization across industrial sectors including chemicals, fertilizers, refining, and shipping. The companies will also ensure compliance with certification standards to guarantee traceability and integrity for European end-users.

Anil Kumar Chalamalasetty, Founder of AM Green, said the agreement marks a milestone in India’s energy transition, emphasizing that the company’s renewable ammonia meets stringent European RFNBO standards and will help multiple downstream industries lower emissions globally.

Michael Lewis, CBE, CEO of Uniper, added:
“Green ammonia is one of the most promising solutions to decarbonize CO₂-intensive industries while offering low CO₂ avoidance costs. This agreement establishes one of the first large-scale supply corridors between India and Europe, supporting sustainable industrial growth at scale.”

Mahesh Kolli, Co-Founder of AM Green, highlighted that the partnership reinforces low-carbon hydrogen and ammonia delivery at scale, enabled by strategic collaboration with investors including Gentari, GIC, and ADIA.

John Roper, CEO Middle East, Uniper Global Commodities, noted that the agreement demonstrates how aligned supply, certification, and demand-side incentives can deliver competitive, renewable molecules to European industry while reducing emissions.
