Basic Energy Corporation has announced a major investment of about P1.9 billion to build a new solar power facility in Negros Occidental. The company is developing a 43-megawatt solar plant called the Cadiz 1 Solar Power Project as part of its plan to expand its renewable energy portfolio and strengthen its position in the Philippine energy sector. This project reached an important milestone after the company received a certificate of award under the government’s Green Energy Auction program.
The auction is part of the Department of Energy’s effort to increase the use of renewable energy in the country’s power supply. Basic Energy is now completing the technical and administrative work needed to keep the project on track. The company aims to begin commercial operations by the end of the year so it can supply clean power to the Visayas grid.
The development of the Cadiz solar plant comes as Basic Energy continues to pursue other large-scale renewable energy projects. The company earlier partnered with Japan-based Renova Inc. for a P5-billion wind farm project in Batangas. These efforts support the national goal of raising the share of renewable energy in the power mix to 35 percent by 2030, up from the current level of around 22 percent. The government has been pushing for stronger progress in clean energy development, and the timing of this project is significant, as the Department of Energy has started a strict review of existing contracts. Authorities recently cancelled more than 160 contracts linked to inactive or stalled energy projects. This move aims to clear the way for serious and capable developers who can deliver on their commitments. By advancing the Cadiz solar project, Basic Energy hopes to show that it is a dependable player in the growing renewable energy sector.
The P1.9-billion solar facility is seen as an important step toward improving energy security and promoting sustainability in the Philippines.
