Construction has officially started on the Khazna Solar PV project in Abu Dhabi, marking another major step in the United Arab Emiratesโ€™ push toward clean and sustainable energy. The project is being developed by Shandong Electric Power Construction Corporation No. 3 (Sepco3), a Chinese engineering company, which has confirmed that full-scale mobilization and on-ground execution activities are now underway.

The Khazna Solar PV project is one of the largest solar power developments in the region. Once completed, it will have a total capacity of 1.5 gigawatts. The project includes a direct current photovoltaic plant capable of generating 1,807 megawatts, highlighting the massive scale of the installation. Construction activities involve extensive groundwork, with more than 9.6 million cubic meters of earthworks planned across the site.

To support the solar plant, around 369,000 support piles will be installed, along with nearly 2.8 million solar modules. The project also includes the development of a dedicated substation and about 25 kilometers of overhead transmission lines, which will connect the facility to the national electricity grid and ensure smooth power evacuation.

The project is expected to deliver significant environmental benefits. Once operational, it will supply clean electricity to approximately 160,000 households across the UAE. In addition, it is projected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by more than 2.4 million tonnes every year, supporting the countryโ€™s long-term climate and decarbonization targets.

From an economic and energy perspective, the Khazna project will strengthen Abu Dhabiโ€™s energy security by diversifying its power generation sources. It will help meet growing electricity demand from homes and industries while reducing reliance on conventional fuels. The project aligns with Abu Dhabiโ€™s goal of sourcing 50% of its electricity from renewable energy by 2030, reinforcing the emirateโ€™s commitment to a sustainable energy future.
