Voltalia has secured another major solar power project in Tunisia, further strengthening its position in the countryโs renewable energy sector. The French renewable energy company has been selected by the Tunisian government to develop the Wadi solar project, a 132-megawatt photovoltaic plant located in the Gabรจs region. This comes after Voltalia previously won the Sagdoud project in May 2024 and the Menzel Habib project in December 2024.
With the addition of the Wadi project, Voltaliaโs total solar capacity set to enter the construction phase in Tunisia now stands at nearly 400 megawatts. All three projects are located close to each other, which is expected to create strong operational advantages. The geographical proximity of the Wadi, Menzel Habib, and Sagdoud sites will allow Voltalia to optimize construction activities by sharing logistics, transportation, and maintenance resources. This approach is expected to reduce overall costs and improve efficiency across the projects.
According to the project timeline, construction of the Wadi solar plant is scheduled to begin in 2027, with commissioning planned for 2028. Once operational, the plant is expected to generate enough clean electricity to meet the annual power needs of around 200,000 people. In addition to improving electricity supply, the project will contribute significantly to environmental protection by avoiding an estimated 120,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions each year.
The Wadi project aligns closely with Tunisiaโs national energy goals. The country aims to increase the share of renewable energy in its electricity mix to 30 percent by 2030. As of the end of April 2025, renewable sources accounted for only about 6 percent of total electricity production, according to the Energy Situation Observatory. Large-scale solar projects like Wadi are therefore seen as critical to closing this gap.
Robert Klein, Chief Executive Officer of Voltalia, welcomed the project award and highlighted its importance for both the company and Tunisia. He said the selection reflects Voltaliaโs growing role in a region with strong solar potential and underlined the contribution of the companyโs local teams. He added that their expertise and commitment are helping Voltalia move steadily toward shared energy transition goals with Tunisian partners.
