The Bihar government has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to procure electricity from the country’s largest solar power project integrated with battery energy storage system (BESS) at Kajra in Lakhisarai district, marking a major step toward strengthening the state’s renewable energy infrastructure and ensuring round-the-clock green power supply.

The MoU was signed between Bihar State Power Generation Company Limited (BSPGCL) and the state’s North and South Bihar power distribution companies, securing long-term offtake of power generated from the 301 MW solar project, which is being developed in two phases and integrated with 523 MWh of battery storage capacity.

The project is currently under construction and is expected to be fully commissioned by January 2027. Phase 1 comprises 185 MW of solar capacity coupled with 282 MWh of battery storage, while Phase 2 will add 116 MW of solar capacity and 241 MWh of battery storage, taking the total installed solar capacity to 301 MW.

With a total investment of over ₹2,865 crore, the project is being developed across 1,232 acres and is positioned as a flagship renewable energy initiative for the state. The integration of battery storage will enable dispatchable renewable power, allowing electricity generated during daytime to be stored and supplied during peak evening demand hours, thereby enhancing grid reliability and reducing dependence on conventional power sources.

State officials said the project will play a critical role in balancing grid fluctuations, improving peak-load management, and supporting Bihar’s compliance with Renewable Purchase Obligation (RPO) targets. The initiative is also aligned with India’s broader energy transition goals, including the national target of achieving 500 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030.

The Kajra solar-battery project is part of Bihar’s larger renewable energy roadmap, under which investments of nearly ₹50,000 crore are underway in the energy sector. Once commissioned, it is expected to serve as a benchmark model for large-scale solar plus storage deployment in India.
