Volks Energie, a leading energy solutions and execution-focused infrastructure company, has successfully completed a multi-location battery bank replacement and commissioning project for Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (PGCIL), including high-altitude installations in Kargil and Leh under extreme climatic and terrain conditions.

The scope of work involved dismantling existing VRLA battery banks and installing, testing, and commissioning newly supplied nickel-cadmium (Ni-Cd) battery banks, manufactured by SAFT India, across critical PGCIL substations. The project execution covered Kargil (Ladakh), Khaltse in Leh, and Yamunanagar (Haryana), with on-ground temperatures in Kargil dropping to -9ยฐC during peak winter conditions.

The project commenced on March 20, 2025, and was completed on January 30, 2026. Despite severe weather, snow-covered terrain, and logistical challenges, Volks Energie deployed two specialised execution teams, comprising five personnel each, ensuring strict adherence to safety protocols, quality standards, and project timelines.

PGCILโ€™s transition from VRLA to Ni-Cd battery technology was driven by the need for enhanced reliability and extended operational life in harsh environments, as Ni-Cd batteries offer service life exceeding 15 years and significantly reduce the risk of sudden failures associated with VRLA systems.

Commenting on the achievement, Piyush Goyal, Co-Founder and CEO of Volks Energie, said the successful execution in challenging geographies such as Kargil and Leh demonstrates the companyโ€™s operational resilience and capability to deliver mission-critical infrastructure projects across diverse climatic conditions.

Beyond the recently completed sites, Volks Energie has commissioned battery bank systems at multiple PGCIL locations, including Dehradun, Kochi, Pavagada, Trichy, and Kancheepuram. To date, 15 battery banks have been successfully installed and commissioned, with several additional projects scheduled for execution in the coming months.

The company is currently executing ongoing battery bank installation projects for PGCIL at Aligarh, Mainpuri, Varanasi, Ballia, Nellore, Munirabad, Kadappa, Panipat, Wagoora, and Gaya.

The Kargil execution follows another landmark infrastructure milestone achieved by Volks Energie in Jammu & Kashmir, where the company recently completed and handed over an HVAC project for J&K Power Development Department (PDD) after five years of operations and maintenance, further strengthening its reputation as a trusted execution partner for national power infrastructure projects in high-risk and extreme environments.
