Ameresco And Luminace Complete 5.74 MW Coventry Landfill Solar Project, Delivering 7.7 Million kWh Annually And Powering Over 1,100 Homes With Clean Energy

Ameresco, Inc., a major provider of energy infrastructure solutions, and Luminace, one of North America’s largest decarbonization-as-a-service companies, have announced the completion of the Coventry Landfill Solar project. This achievement marks a significant step forward in the Town of Coventry’s long-term plans to expand renewable energy production and strengthen environmental responsibility. The new solar installation at the Coventry landfill includes a 5.740 MW solar array designed to generate roughly 7.7 million kWh of clean electricity every year. This output is enough to supply power to more than 1,100 homes. The project is also expected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by an estimated 3,760 tons annually, offering a measurable environmental benefit for the region.

Developed on a capped landfill that previously offered few redevelopment options and is classified under the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA), the project demonstrates how land with limited traditional use can be transformed into a valuable clean-energy resource. Turning this underutilized space into a productive solar facility highlights the growing potential of landfill-based renewable energy systems. Beyond the environmental advantages, the Coventry Landfill Solar project is expected to create meaningful economic value for the town. The solar array will generate lease income, taxes and reimbursement for the landfill cap maintenance policy.

Over the initial lease period, the town’s total economic gain is estimated at around $4.4 million. This new revenue stream, combined with the repurposing of previously idle land, also contributes to local employment and overall economic activity. Town officials have expressed strong support for the project. Andrew E. Nota, Town Manager of East Greenwich, said the completion of the solar facility represents a significant milestone in meeting local sustainability goals. He emphasized that the project brings substantial economic benefits and praised Ameresco’s work in helping bring the initiative to life.

Ameresco also highlighted the broader meaning of the project. According to Jonathan Mancini, Senior Vice President of Solar and BESS Project Development, the Coventry Landfill Solar project reflects the company’s focus on innovative renewable energy solutions. He noted that converting landfills into productive solar and storage sites strengthens community resilience and energy security while creating long-term sustainable assets. As the project owner, Luminace is continuing to strengthen its presence in Rhode Island. The company sees this development as part of its strategy to expand clean-energy access and support regional sustainability goals across New England.

Robert Rabe, Chief Development Officer at Luminace, said the partnership with Ameresco has played an important role in increasing solar availability for local residents and businesses, while also reinforcing the company’s broader growth plans in key U.S. markets. The announcement also included recognition from St. George’s School, which now receives about 85% of its electricity from solar power. Dana Schmaltz, Chair of the School’s Board of Trustees, said the shift to solar is crucial at a time when global warming and rising electricity prices pose ongoing challenges.

He noted that the project significantly reduces the school’s carbon footprint while lowering operating costs, a win for both the institution and the wider community. With construction now complete, the Coventry Landfill Solar project stands as a strong example of how communities can turn underused land into a dependable and sustainable source of clean energy. It demonstrates the value of innovative development and strategic partnerships in advancing renewable energy goals across the country.
