Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) has inaugurated a 71 MWp solar power plant in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, marking another step in its renewable energy journey. The project was virtually inaugurated by Union Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri during India Energy Week.
The solar power plant has an installed capacity of 71 MWp (DC) and 52 MW (AC). It is expected to generate around 103.61 million units of green electricity every year. This clean energy production will help reduce carbon emissions by nearly 75,150 metric tonnes annually. The environmental impact is said to be equal to planting around 1.25 crore trees, highlighting the projectโs contribution to climate action.
The facility is spread across 210 acres of land in Prayagraj. It has been developed using around 1.29 lakh solar modules. To support the installation, about 1,324 metric tonnes of structural steel have been used. The project also includes nearly 294 kilometres of cabling infrastructure to ensure proper connectivity and power evacuation. The plant is connected to the grid through a 132 kV transmission line, allowing efficient and reliable transmission of electricity.
The green power generated at the Prayagraj plant will be supplied to BPCLโs refineries located in Mumbai, Bina, and Kochi. By using renewable energy for its refinery operations, the company aims to lower its carbon footprint and move towards cleaner and more sustainable operations. This step also aligns with Indiaโs broader focus on increasing the share of renewable energy in the overall power mix.
BPCL has been gradually integrating renewable energy into its core business operations. As a major public sector oil marketing company, it is working to balance traditional energy operations with cleaner energy solutions. The commissioning of this solar power plant reflects the companyโs commitment to sustainability and responsible growth.
The project also supports the countryโs larger climate goals by promoting green energy generation and reducing dependence on fossil fuels. With this new plant in Uttar Pradesh, BPCL continues to strengthen its renewable energy portfolio while contributing to Indiaโs energy transition and low-carbon future.
