The Rural Electrification Agency (REA) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to deploy solar power systems to 15 health and education institutions in Nigeria.
The initiative is backed by a $700,000 grant under the Regional Off-Grid Electricity Access Project (ROGEAP), a programme aimed at expanding sustainable electricity access across West Africa through decentralized renewable energy solutions.
Under the agreement, selected schools and healthcare facilities will be equipped with solar photovoltaic (PV) systems to improve service delivery, enhance learning conditions, and strengthen healthcare outcomes in underserved communities.
REA said the partnership aligns with its mandate to accelerate rural electrification through clean energy solutions, while supporting broader regional efforts to promote energy access and sustainable development.
The project is expected to strengthen collaboration between Nigeria and ECOWAS member states in advancing off-grid electrification and scaling renewable energy deployment across critical public institutions.
