In a major step to strengthen grid stability and support renewable energy integration, Eagle Infra India and OPG Power Ventures have won capacity in a battery energy storage auction conducted by Tamil Nadu Green Energy Corporation. The auction was aimed at setting up seven standalone Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) with a total planned capacity of 375 MW/1,500 MWh.
According to the auction results, the capacity was almost evenly split between the two developers. Eagle Infra India secured 175 MW/700 MWh at a tariff of โน315,000 per MW per month. OPG Power Ventures also won 175 MW/700 MWh, quoting a slightly higher tariff of โน316,000 per MW per month. Although the tender issued in November 2025 targeted 1,500 MWh of storage, the final awarded capacity stood at 1,400 MWh.
Under the project terms, both developers will be responsible for designing, financing, installing, and operating the battery systems. The storage facilities will be connected to the state transmission network and will draw power from the grid through TANTRANSCO and TNPDCL. The systems will charge and discharge power based on instructions from the state load dispatch center to help manage peak demand and grid fluctuations.
The projects come with strict technical standards. The batteries must maintain 95% annual availability, complete 1.5 cycles per day, and achieve a minimum round-trip efficiency of 85%. To improve financial viability, the government will provide viability gap funding of โน1.8 million per MWh.
Developers have 18 months to complete the projects. Once commissioned, the systems will operate under a 15-year contract, supporting Tamil Naduโs long-term clean energy goals.
