Abu Dhabi has taken a significant step toward accelerating its clean energy transition with the launch of a new solar self-supply policy by the Abu Dhabi Department of Energy. Announced on February 5, 2026, the policy aims to empower consumers to generate their own electricity using solar photovoltaic (PV) systems while improving overall energy efficiency across the emirate.
The initiative forms part of the broader Abu Dhabi Energy and Water Efficiency Strategy 2030, which seeks to transform how energy is produced and consumed. By encouraging the adoption of renewable energy solutions, the policy supports Abu Dhabiโs long-term sustainability and emissions reduction goals.
Under the new framework, customers can choose flexible energy solutions, including installing rooftop solar panels, solar-powered water heaters, and battery storage systems. These options allow users to generate and consume electricity independently or operate alongside the main grid. The approach is designed to enhance grid efficiency, improve energy security, and reduce peak demand.
In its initial phase, the policy will focus on the agricultural sector, as well as owners of rest houses and ranches. These groups are expected to benefit from reduced energy costs and improved access to reliable power, particularly during high-demand periods. Over time, the policy is expected to expand to other consumer segments.
Alongside the rollout, the Department of Energy plans to introduce a comprehensive guidance manual on high-efficiency appliances. The manual will help households and businesses make informed decisions on energy use, covering areas such as cooling, lighting, water heating, and irrigation systems.
Officials emphasised that the policy marks a key milestone in developing a diversified and resilient energy mix, while supporting stronger infrastructure, responsible consumption, and long-term cost savings for consumers.
