PT Garuda Yamato Steel (GYS), one of Indonesia’s leading integrated steel manufacturers, has commissioned its first large-scale solar power facility in partnership with iForte Energi, marking a major step toward sustainable steel production. The newly installed solar system spans approximately 55,000 square meters and has a total capacity of 6.5 MWp, making it one of the most significant renewable energy deployments in Indonesia’s steel sector.
The solar installation is designed to supply clean electricity to key manufacturing operations, including steel melting shops, rolling mills, warehouses, and administrative buildings. By integrating renewable energy into its operations, the company aims to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions and contribute to Indonesia’s broader push toward greener industrial practices.
This initiative is part of PT Garuda Yamato Steel’s long-term strategy to decarbonize its operations and strengthen its position as a sustainable manufacturing leader. A key component of this strategy is the use of Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) technology, which is known to produce lower carbon emissions compared to conventional blast furnace methods. The company has also embraced circular economy principles by establishing systems to recover and recycle steel scrap materials in collaboration with local communities and industrial partners. This approach helps minimize waste while ensuring efficient reuse of resources.
In addition to adopting cleaner technologies, GYS continues to invest in modernizing its facilities. The ongoing upgrade of Beam Plant 1 reflects the company’s focus on improving energy efficiency and maintaining high production standards through advanced technology.
The solar project has been supported by PLN Indonesia, the state-owned electricity company, highlighting the importance of collaboration in advancing renewable energy adoption. This partnership aligns with Indonesia’s national target of achieving net-zero emissions and supports the country’s transition toward a low-carbon economy.
According to Tony Taniwan, President Director of PT Garuda Yamato Steel, the commissioning of the solar facility represents a significant milestone in the company’s sustainability journey. He emphasized that integrating renewable energy not only reduces environmental impact but also creates long-term value for stakeholders, including customers, employees, and local communities.
Looking ahead, PT Garuda Yamato Steel plans to expand its solar capacity by installing additional panels on available rooftops and land. The company is also exploring further energy-efficiency measures and developing low-carbon steel products to meet rising market demand. Through these efforts, GYS aims to strengthen its role in promoting sustainable industrial development in Indonesia.
