Power Grid Corporation of India Limited has taken a major step in expanding its global presence by setting up a new subsidiary in Kenya. The company shared this update on April 22, 2026, through a formal disclosure to the National Stock Exchange of India and BSE Limited. This move highlights its growing focus on international projects, especially in emerging energy markets.

The newly formed company, Mwanga Transmission Company Limited, has been created as a Special Purpose Vehicle to implement the Kenya Transmission Public Private Partnership project. This initiative is being developed in collaboration with Africa50, which supports large-scale infrastructure projects across Africa. The company has been officially registered as a Private Limited entity under Kenyaโ€™s Companies Act, 2015, with its incorporation certificate issued on April 21, 2026.

The project falls under a Public Private Partnership model and is based on a Project Agreement signed with Kenya Electricity Transmission Company Limited. Known as the Kenya Independent Power Transmission Project, the initiative aims to strengthen the countryโ€™s power transmission network by bringing in private investment and technical expertise.

In terms of ownership, Africa50 holds a majority 60 percent equity stake in the new company, while POWERGRID owns the remaining 40 percent. This structure reflects a balanced partnership that combines regional investment knowledge with strong technical capabilities in power transmission.

The announcement was made in line with Regulation 30 of the SEBI (Listing Obligations and Disclosure Requirements) Regulations, 2015, ensuring transparency for investors and stakeholders. By entering this partnership, POWERGRID is not only expanding its operations beyond India but also contributing to the development of reliable and efficient energy infrastructure in East Africa.

This development marks an important milestone for the company as it continues to explore global opportunities and support sustainable energy growth in international markets.
