SteelAsia And Buskowitz Energy Partner For Philippines’ Largest Industrial Rooftop Solar Project

SteelAsia Manufacturing Corp. has partnered with Buskowitz Energy to develop a large 8-megawatt peak solar rooftop project at its Compostela Works facility in Cebu. This project is expected to become the largest single-roof industrial solar installation in the Philippines, marking an important step for renewable energy adoption in the country’s heavy industry sector.

The installation will include 12,888 solar panels and 54 inverters spread across a roof area of 65,560 square meters. Once completed, which is targeted for November 2026, the system is projected to generate around 12,000 megawatt-hours of clean electricity each year. This will meet nearly 25 percent of the plant’s total power requirement, helping the company reduce its dependence on conventional energy sources and manage rising electricity costs.

The project also brings strong environmental benefits. It is expected to cut carbon emissions by about 8,400 metric tons of carbon dioxide annually. Over five years, this reduction is comparable to recycling more than 73,000 tons of waste or saving around 90 million liters of gasoline. This highlights the significant role large-scale solar projects can play in reducing industrial carbon footprints.

Buskowitz Energy will be responsible for the entire project, including engineering, procurement, construction, and long-term operations and maintenance. The company’s CEO, James Buskowitz, said the partnership shows how renewable energy can be successfully integrated into large manufacturing operations. He added that the project reflects a shared focus on improving efficiency while supporting long-term sustainability goals.

SteelAsia’s Executive Vice Chairman, Andre Sy, stated that the company has traditionally relied on hydroelectric and geothermal energy. However, it is now increasing its use of solar power because it is practical and scalable. The Compostela facility is the second SteelAsia plant to adopt solar energy, and similar projects are being planned for other locations.

This development reflects a wider trend in the Philippines, where industrial companies are turning to solar energy to reduce emissions and improve energy security. By using large rooftop spaces for solar generation, companies like SteelAsia are showing how heavy industries can move towards cleaner and more sustainable operations while maintaining productivity.
