Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) significantly expanded its electricity distribution network during 2025 by commissioning 1,994 new 11-kilovolt distribution substations across Dubai. The achievement marks a substantial increase of more than 30 percent compared to the 1,530 substations installed in 2024. With these additions, the total number of medium-voltage distribution substations in Dubai reached 47,060 by the end of 2025, reflecting the utility’s ongoing efforts to strengthen the emirate’s power infrastructure.

The expansion comes as Dubai continues to experience rapid economic growth, urban development, and increasing demand for utility services. DEWA has been investing heavily in upgrading and expanding its electricity and water networks to ensure they can meet the requirements of a growing population and a steadily expanding business sector.

Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of DEWA, stated that the utility is committed to enhancing its infrastructure to support Dubai’s development plans through 2030 and beyond. He noted that the expansion of the power grid is aligned with key strategic initiatives, including the Dubai Economic Agenda (D33) and the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan. According to Al Tayer, maintaining a reliable and advanced utility network is essential for supporting economic activities and strengthening Dubai’s position as a leading destination for residents, businesses, and investors.

The large-scale deployment of new substations required extensive planning, coordination, and workforce involvement. Rashid bin Humaidan, Executive Vice President of Distribution Power at DEWA, revealed that the utility’s teams dedicated more than 1.45 million working hours during 2025 to construct, connect, and commission the substations. The work involved multiple stages, including engineering, installation, testing, and integration with the existing power network.

Despite the scale and complexity of the project, DEWA maintained strict adherence to international health and safety standards throughout the construction and commissioning process. The utility emphasized that all activities were completed safely while ensuring high levels of operational efficiency and service reliability.

The expansion of the medium-voltage distribution network is expected to support the growing electricity needs of residential communities, commercial centers, and industrial developments throughout Dubai. By increasing network capacity and improving grid reliability, DEWA aims to provide an uninterrupted power supply to support the emirate’s continued growth.
