Bangladesh PDB Proposes Country’s Largest 442MW Solar Power Plant in Rampal

The Bangladesh Power Development Board (PDB) has proposed the development of Bangladesh’s largest grid-connected solar power plant, a 442MW facility to be located in Rampal, Bagerhat, as part of the country’s accelerated renewable energy expansion strategy.

The proposed project carries an estimated investment of Tk2,502.39 crore and is expected to be financed primarily through the Power Development Fund. According to the proposal, the solar plant is targeted for commissioning by December 2030, subject to regulatory and planning approvals.

PDB has projected the electricity tariff from the Rampal solar facility at Tk6.18 per unit, notably lower than the Tk8.87 per unit tariff of the existing 220MW Sonagazi solar project. Although the Rampal project is expected to operate at a comparatively lower capacity utilisation factor of 17%, officials noted that lower infrastructure development requirements and reduced transmission costs enhance its overall economic viability.

The proposed solar project aligns with Bangladesh’s Renewable Energy Policy 2025 and supports the country’s climate commitments under the Paris Agreement. The initiative is expected to contribute significantly to expanding renewable energy generation capacity as Bangladesh seeks to address growing electricity demand and strengthen energy security.

The project proposal has been submitted to the Planning Commission of Bangladesh for priority approval.
