SPML Infra Wins ₹1,128 Crore 1 GWh Battery Energy Storage Project From NTPC In Bihar

SPML Infra Limited has secured a major contract worth ₹1,128 crore from NTPC Limited for the development of a 1 GWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project at the Barauni Thermal Power Station in Bihar. The project marks SPML Infra’s first large-scale grid-connected battery energy storage project and is considered one of the largest single BESS orders awarded in India so far.

The Kolkata-based infrastructure company announced that the project will involve the supply, civil works, and erection of a 250 MW/1,000 MWh Battery Energy Storage System. The system will include 5 MWh DC battery containers equipped with Battery Management Systems (BMS) and Thermal Management Systems (TMS). In addition, the project scope covers 33 kV panel boards, 220 kV DC and AC cables, a 220 kV switchyard, and other associated equipment and accessories.

The project is expected to be completed within 18 months. SPML Infra will also undertake operations and maintenance responsibilities for a period of 15 years after commissioning.

The battery energy storage system will be integrated with the existing thermal power infrastructure at NTPC’s Barauni Thermal Power Station. The project is aimed at supporting peak load management, improving grid stability, and enabling better integration of renewable energy into the power network. As India increases its renewable energy capacity, battery storage systems are becoming increasingly important for balancing power demand and ensuring uninterrupted electricity supply.

Industry experts believe large-scale battery storage projects will play a key role in strengthening India’s energy transition and supporting the country’s long-term clean energy targets. The NTPC project is also expected to accelerate the deployment of advanced energy storage technologies in the country.
