AboitizPower Highlights How Rooftop Solar Helps Manila Study Centers Improve Comfort And Cut Electricity Costs

A study center owner in Metro Manila once required teachers to switch on the air conditioning only when at least ten students were present—a small but familiar cost-saving measure among Filipino households facing high electricity prices. Today, that rule no longer applies. After installing a rooftop solar system, the center now comfortably uses air conditioning even before classes begin.

Stories like this reflect the broader shift in Filipino attitudes toward rooftop solar, as more households look for relief amid rising fuel costs, the onset of the summer season, and the country’s continued exposure to global energy market volatility. After years of relatively stable electricity prices abroad, Filipinos who return home often quickly re-experience the reality of high and unpredictable energy costs.

This environment has helped push interest in rooftop solar to new levels. Even before recent price increases, a 2024 Ateneo de Manila University study reported that 82 percent of 403 respondents across Metro Manila and nearby provinces expressed interest in adopting solar panels.According to the study, homeowners recognize both the economic and environmental benefits of rooftop solar.

Savings on electricity bills remain the strongest motivator, while other advantages—such as increased property value and added roof protection—are less commonly known but increasingly relevant as adoption grows.Industry estimates show that small rooftop solar systems can reduce electricity bills by 30 to 50 percent each month. With a lifespan of up to 25 years, most systems achieve full return on investment within three to five years.

Seventy-five percent of respondents in the Ateneo study view rooftop solar as a long-term investment, though 67 percent still believe the upfront cost remains high. Limited information and low trust in installers also continue to slow adoption, even among interested homeowners. To address these barriers, Solviva Energy has introduced zero down payment rent-to-own rooftop solar systems, allowing customers to reduce their power expenses immediately without bearing the initial financial burden.

The company also provides end-to-end support—from home assessments and custom system design to installation, energization, and after-sales assistance—to build trust and ensure long-term performance.Solviva says the investment can lead to additional savings through net metering, where households can send excess energy back to the grid. Homeowners may also expand their systems or add batteries to further enhance energy independence.

According to the company, the impact of solar often becomes real the moment customers receive their first electricity bill after installation. Many share photos of their lower bills with the Solviva team, signaling relief and reassurance about the decision they made.Solar energy is expected to play a significant role in the country’s energy future, supported by both large-scale installations and increasing household adoption.

This transition will require continued upgrades to transmission and distribution systems to enable a more decentralized and resilient power grid. For many Filipino households, the shift to solar is not just about savings—it restores everyday comforts long compromised by high electricity costs. As the study center owner’s experience shows, solar power is helping Filipinos regain conveniences they once thought they had to give up.
