India’s energy storage sector has received another major boost with the award of a large-scale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project in Uttar Pradesh. MKC Green Energy Limited has secured a Letter of Award (LoA) from Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (UPPCL) for the development of a 125 MW / 500 MWh standalone battery energy storage project. The project represents one of the largest state-level grid-scale energy storage initiatives currently planned in the country.
The project will be connected to the Uttar Pradesh State Transmission Utility (UP-STU) network and is expected to play a significant role in strengthening the state’s power infrastructure. The battery storage facility will help improve grid reliability, support peak demand management, and enable greater integration of renewable energy sources into the electricity network.
The award forms part of UPPCL’s broader plan to procure a total of 375 MW / 1500 MWh of battery energy storage capacity through a transparent tariff-based competitive bidding process. This initiative reflects the growing importance of energy storage systems in supporting India’s transition toward a cleaner and more sustainable power sector.
Battery Energy Storage Systems are increasingly becoming a critical component of modern power grids. As renewable energy generation from solar and wind continues to expand, energy storage solutions help address challenges related to intermittency and supply-demand balancing. Large-scale storage facilities can store excess electricity generated during periods of high renewable energy production and discharge it when demand increases, ensuring a stable and reliable power supply.
The project will also receive financial support through Viability Gap Funding (VGF) under the Power System Development Fund (PSDF) scheme. Such support mechanisms are designed to encourage the deployment of advanced energy storage technologies and accelerate investments in clean energy infrastructure.
Industry experts view projects of this scale as an important step toward enhancing energy security while reducing dependence on conventional power sources. The development is expected to contribute to grid modernization efforts and support the state’s long-term energy goals.
