The legislation is designed to simplify approval procedures for renewable energy projects while strengthening legal certainty for developers and investors. The move forms part of Austria’s broader strategy to accelerate the energy transition and expand renewable energy generation capacity over the coming decade.

Austrian Federal Minister of Economy and Energy Wolfgang Hattmannsdorfer described the law as a significant milestone for the country’s energy sector and investment environment. He noted that the legislation would accelerate and simplify approval procedures through clearer processes, consolidated responsibilities, and more efficient administrative mechanisms.

The Renewable Expansion Acceleration Act covers a wide range of clean energy technologies, including wind power, solar photovoltaic (PV) systems, hydropower, geothermal energy, electricity transmission networks, and energy storage projects. The law also seeks to reduce delays in securing permits for critical energy infrastructure developments, enabling faster project implementation.

Austria is pursuing ambitious renewable energy expansion targets as part of its long-term climate and energy strategy. The country aims to increase renewable electricity generation by 30 terawatt-hours (TWh) by 2030 and further expand that figure to 40 TWh by 2035.

The new legislation is expected to support Austria’s efforts to strengthen energy security, attract investment in renewable energy infrastructure, and advance the country’s decarbonization objectives while accelerating the deployment of clean energy projects nationwide.
