President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi has reviewed progress on Egypt’s renewable energy expansion plans, including national grid enhancement projects, large-scale solar developments, battery energy storage systems, and the ambitious Energy Valley project aimed at supporting the country’s clean energy transition.
During a meeting with Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly and Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mahmoud Ismat, President El-Sisi was briefed on the implementation status of the second phase of projects designed to strengthen the national electricity grid. According to the Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy, the second phase comprises approximately 105 projects aimed at enhancing grid reliability and supporting the integration of renewable energy sources.
The discussions focused on the progress of connecting solar and wind energy projects to the national electricity network by 2027. President El-Sisi emphasized the importance of improving electricity supply quality, increasing the efficiency of conventional fuel utilization, and ensuring grid stability while adhering to established implementation timelines. The initiatives form part of Egypt’s broader strategy to advance sustainable development and accelerate the country’s energy transition.
Officials also reviewed the implementation of solar power and energy storage projects intended to increase the share of renewable energy in Egypt’s electricity mix to 45% within the next two years. Plans include the expansion of both grid-connected and standalone battery energy storage facilities to improve system flexibility and renewable energy integration.
Among the key projects discussed was the Obelisk Solar Power Plant. The first phase of the facility, comprising 500 MW of solar generation capacity and a 200 MWh grid-connected battery energy storage system, was successfully connected to the national grid earlier this year. The second phase, which will add another 500 MW of solar capacity, is expected to be connected to the grid in the coming weeks, supporting the integration of additional renewable energy capacity during the current summer season.
President El-Sisi directed authorities to maintain continuous monitoring and periodic reviews of renewable energy projects under development and operation. He also called for strengthened cooperation among government entities and local and international private sector partners involved in project execution under Egypt’s National Energy Strategy. The President further stressed the importance of expanding energy storage systems, particularly those financed in local currency, to maximize renewable energy utilization and enhance grid resilience.
The meeting also reviewed progress on the Energy Valley project, one of the world’s largest integrated clean energy developments. The project is planned to deliver 1.7 GWac of solar photovoltaic generation capacity in Minya Governorate and will be supported by battery energy storage systems totaling 4 GWh. The storage facilities will be distributed across Minya Governorate, Qena Governorate and Alexandria Governorate.
President El-Sisi highlighted the strategic importance of these projects in expanding renewable energy deployment, reducing carbon emissions, diversifying Egypt’s energy sources, and strengthening long-term energy security. He also reiterated that localizing renewable energy manufacturing and associated industries remains a key pillar of the country’s green transition strategy.
