The large-scale hybrid renewable energy project will integrate approximately 380MWp of solar generation capacity with an 843MWh battery energy storage system, strengthening renewable energy supply within Australia’s National Electricity Market (NEM). Once operational, the facility is expected to generate enough electricity annually to power around 126,000 homes while enhancing grid reliability through flexible energy storage capabilities.

Spread across a 600-hectare site, the Lower Wonga development is among the most significant solar-plus-storage projects currently under construction in Australia. The integrated battery system will provide approximately three hours of energy storage, supporting grid stability and helping manage fluctuations in electricity demand.

Under the contract, INTEC Energy Solutions will oversee the complete EPC scope of the project in collaboration with Gotion High-Tech Australia. Gotion High-Tech specializes in utility-scale energy storage solutions and lithium-ion battery technologies designed for renewable energy applications.

Construction activities have commenced, with project completion targeted for 2028. The development is expected to create more than 400 jobs during the construction phase, contributing to regional economic growth and workforce development.

Commenting on the project, Phil Wood, Country Manager for Australia and New Zealand at INTEC Energy Solutions, stated that the Lower Wonga project represents a significant milestone in the company’s long-term expansion strategy across Australia and the Asia-Pacific region. He highlighted the growing importance of integrated solar and battery storage projects in delivering reliable, scalable, and cost-effective renewable energy infrastructure capable of meeting future transmission and storage requirements.

Wood added that the project reinforces INTEC’s position as a trusted partner for large-scale renewable energy and energy storage developments, while further strengthening its collaboration with Lightsource bp.

INTEC’s appointment builds on its existing presence in the Gympie region, where the company has been involved in the delivery of the Woolooga BESS project for Lightsource bp since 2025. Construction of the Woolooga project began in March 2025 and is currently in the final stages of commissioning, further enhancing INTEC’s local project delivery expertise, regional supply chain network, and long-term operational footprint in Queensland.
