Iberdrola Advances Its Smart Energy Vision With New AI Initiatives And Long-Term Technology Investments

Iberdrola recently brought together industry experts, technology leaders, and employees for the 12th edition of its Digital Summit, held at the companyโ€™s corporate campus in San Agustรญn del Guadalix, Madrid. Organised by Iberdrolaโ€™s IT department, the annual event has become an important forum for sharing knowledge, showcasing digital innovation, and encouraging collaboration across the organisation.

During the summit, the company reaffirmed its commitment to investing โ‚ฌ1.6 billion in research, development, and innovation between 2025 and 2028. This investment forms part of Iberdrolaโ€™s broader strategy to support the electrification of the economy while accelerating the adoption of advanced digital technologies across its operations.

Held under the theme โ€œEnergIA that Transforms,โ€ the 2026 edition focused on the growing influence of artificial intelligence and its ability to reshape industries, improve efficiency, and drive sustainable growth. Opening the event, Iberdrola CEO Pedro Azagra discussed how AI is transforming the way businesses operate, make decisions, and interact with customers. He also highlighted the importance of adopting these technologies responsibly to ensure they create long-term value while fostering innovation.

The event featured a packed programme of presentations and discussions involving experts from leading global companies such as Microsoft, Google, IBM, ABB, Plain Concepts, Gestamp, and BYD. Participants explored a range of topics, including the large-scale deployment of AI, the strategic use of data, cybersecurity challenges, customer experience improvements, robotics, and the potential of quantum technologies.

Alongside the conference sessions, attendees were able to visit an innovation showcase where eight technology partnersโ€”AWS, NTT DATA, Capgemini, EY, Salesforce, SAP, Minsait, and Tecnaliaโ€”demonstrated cutting-edge digital solutions designed to improve business performance and support the energy transition.A key message throughout the summit was the growing role of digitalisation in Iberdrolaโ€™s long-term strategy.

The company is increasingly integrating advanced technologies across its entire value chain to create a smarter, more efficient, and more sustainable energy system. These efforts are helping Iberdrola accelerate electrification while improving operational performance and decision-making through data-driven insights.

Artificial intelligence has already become a major part of Iberdrolaโ€™s operations. The company currently has more than 300 AI projects underway across different business areas.
