Manila Electric Company (Meralco), through its power generation arm Meralco PowerGen Corp. (MGEN), has entered into a partnership with Vietnam-based VinEnergo Energy Joint Stock Company to explore the development of large-scale renewable energy and energy storage projects. The three companies recently signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) aimed at studying solutions that could provide up to 5 gigawatts (GW) of baseload-equivalent power for the Philippines.
The proposed initiative is designed to support the country’s growing electricity demand while accelerating the transition toward cleaner and more sustainable energy sources. Since renewable energy sources such as solar and wind are dependent on weather conditions, achieving a stable and reliable 5-GW power supply would require a much larger renewable energy capacity. According to Meralco, the project may need around 25 GW of integrated renewable energy generation combined with advanced energy storage systems.
The companies believe that combining renewable energy with large-scale storage can help deliver a dependable power supply similar to conventional power plants. The study will examine how clean energy can be used to provide reliable electricity while reducing dependence on traditional fossil fuel-based generation.
Apart from power generation, the agreement also includes cooperation in system adequacy, power development planning, and the deployment of emerging energy technologies. The partners will also explore opportunities in electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure for residential, commercial, and fleet applications.
MGEN President Emmanuel Rubio said the company remains committed to identifying energy solutions that are reliable, affordable, and sustainable to meet the changing needs of consumers. VinEnergo General Director Nguyen Anh Khoa highlighted the shared commitment of both organizations to advancing clean energy development and expressed optimism about future collaborations that could benefit communities.
Meralco Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Ronnie Aperocho emphasized that addressing the country’s energy challenges requires cooperation among different stakeholders. He noted that energy security cannot be achieved by a single company or sector alone and called for industry-wide collaboration to develop innovative and scalable solutions.
Through this partnership, Meralco, MGEN, and VinEnergo aim to strengthen the Philippines’ energy sector by improving energy security, supporting renewable energy growth, and helping the country achieve its long-term clean energy objectives.
