A joint venture between OQ Alternative Energies and French energy company TotalEnergies has successfully energized the North Oman Solar project, marking a major milestone in the development of one of Oman’s significant renewable energy projects. The achievement indicates that the project has moved beyond the construction stage and entered the final phase of testing and operational preparations before commercial operations begin in the second quarter of 2026.
The project is being developed through a partnership in which OQ Alternative Energies holds a 51 percent stake, while TotalEnergies owns the remaining 49 percent. The successful energization confirms that the solar plant’s electrical systems are now active and undergoing final performance checks before full-scale electricity generation starts.
Located at Saih Nihada within the Block 6 concession area operated by Petroleum Development Oman (PDO), the North Oman Solar project has a planned capacity of 105 megawatts. Once operational, the facility will generate clean electricity that will be supplied directly to PDO’s oil and gas production facilities. The use of solar energy is expected to help reduce dependence on conventional power sources and support PDO’s efforts to lower carbon emissions from its operations.
Project officials described the energization as an important achievement and praised the cooperation between all teams involved in the development. They noted that the smooth progress from construction to testing reflects strong planning, effective coordination, and a commitment to maintaining high safety standards throughout the project. Company representatives also stated that the North Oman Solar plant is their first completed renewable energy asset in Oman and serves as the foundation for future collaboration in the country’s growing clean energy sector.
The solar project is part of a broader sustainability initiative launched by Petroleum Development Oman under the Rawafid Projects program. In addition to the solar facility, the program includes two wind power projects, Riyah-1 and Riyah-2, which are currently under construction near the Amin and West Nimr fields in southern Oman.
Together, the two wind projects are expected to add 234 megawatts of renewable energy capacity when they become operational in the fourth quarter of 2026. Combined with the North Oman Solar plant, these projects are expected to strengthen Oman’s renewable energy portfolio and support the country’s transition toward cleaner and more sustainable energy sources. The developments also demonstrate the increasing role of renewable energy in supporting industrial operations while contributing to long-term environmental goals.
