Bondada Engineering Wins NTPC REL Order For India’s Largest 100 MWh Vanadium Flow Battery Project

Bondada Engineering Limited has received a major boost to its renewable energy business after securing a Notification of Award (NoA) from NTPC Renewable Energy Limited for the development of a 100 MWh Vanadium Redox Flow Battery Energy Storage System (VRFB BESS). The project will be developed at the Khavda Solar Park in Gujarat, marking a significant milestone for India’s energy storage sector.

The project has been awarded under an Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contract. Bondada Engineering will be responsible for designing, supplying, installing, testing, and commissioning the battery energy storage system. In addition, the company will provide operation and maintenance (O&M) services for a period of 10 years. The project is scheduled to be completed within 10 months from the date of receiving the award. Delectrik Systems Pvt. Ltd. will serve as the technology partner for the project.

According to the company, this will be India’s first and largest grid-scale Vanadium Redox Flow Battery project. VRFB technology is considered a long-duration energy storage solution and offers several advantages over conventional Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) battery systems. Unlike LFP batteries, which generally have an operational life of 12 to 15 years and depend heavily on imported battery cells, VRFB systems can operate for more than 25 years with minimal performance degradation even under frequent charge and discharge cycles. The technology also offers enhanced safety, lower operating costs, and supports domestic energy security, as India has indigenous vanadium resources that can reduce dependence on imports.

The project aligns with India’s ambitious energy storage goals as the country plans to deploy nearly 236 GWh of battery energy storage capacity by 2030, compared to the current installed capacity of around 3.3 GWh. Bondada Engineering said the contract strengthens its position in the fast-growing energy storage market while expanding its renewable EPC portfolio. The company also clarified that neither its promoters nor group companies have any interest in NTPC Renewable Energy Limited, and the contract does not constitute a related-party transaction.
